Why Start An Apprenticeship?

When you graduate from high school you have three options:

  1. Continue your education
  2. Go directly to work
  3. Work while you’re learning

Through an apprenticeship program, you can earn while you learn. You must be 16-years of age and have a real desire to be a part of an apprenticeship training program.

Benefits

  • Receive wages and benefits the same as any other employee. As an apprentice, you are considered an employee of the employer. You will have an increasing scale of wages during the entire training period.
  • Get on-the-job training under the guidance of skilled journeymen. A registered apprenticeship program ensures that a sufficient number of journeymen will be available for training each apprentice.
  • Have a detailed, planned training schedule during the term of apprenticeship. A registered apprenticeship program ensures that the training will meet acceptable national industrial training standards.
  • A registered apprenticeship program assures proper related technical instruction in the form of classroom, home study or correspondence courses.
  • Obtain reduced costs of the required related training. Most Utah colleges reduce tuition by 50% for registered apprentices. While in high school, related instruction is generally free.
  • Earn recognition locally, statewide and nationally for successful completion of the program. Upon successful completion of the program, you can obtain journeyman status.
  • Start a path to a successful career with improved job security, long-term commitment by the employer sponsor, a broader based for advancement and full-time employment-subject to business conditions.

Talk to your parents, consult with your school counselor and set up a Student Education Occupation Plan (SEOP) conference to get started today!
