How to Become a Sponsor

Employers, who employ novice workers/apprentices and are able to train those workers in all aspects and tasks of the given occupation, can become sponsors of their workers. An employer must request the Office of Apprenticeship for such recognition. The service is free for either the employer or the apprentice(s).

An employer sponsor promises to train the worker(s) to at least minimum standards, and the Office of Apprenticeship promises the credentials. There are no exams and no extensive paperwork involved.

Paperwork includes:

  1. A signed agreement to train the workers (as set forth in a set of standards)
  2. An agreement to notify the Office of Apprenticeship when those registered workers are either terminated or complete the program.

The Office of Apprenticeship sends the sponsor a Certificate of Competency for his/her signature before the certificate is presented to the completing apprentice. This certificate verifies that the worker has attained the level of journeyman.
