Getting Started

High school students, during their junior and senior years, have an opportunity to work part-time in a career of choice as a registered apprentice. Apprenticeship opportunities give high school students an option to learn skills that will give them a head start on a good paying career. Counselors

How Can You Help A Student Interested In Apprenticeship?

  • Review the apprenticeable occupation list with the student. There are over 1000 trades, arts, occupations, professions, etc. that fit under the apprenticeship training model. Make sure that this experience aligns with the student's SEOP. Consider any interest inventories that the student has taken.
  • Visit the apprenticeship sponsor list available online at http://www.utahtraining.org/seekers/sponsors.html. This listing of registered program sponsors does not signify they are taking applications for apprenticeship or employment. It is a starting place to see, which companies in your area have a registered apprenticeship program. A student must have a job with a registered apprenticeship program sponsor in order to participate.
  • Contact the employer sponsor to see if there is a possibility of the company hiring a youth apprentice. Remember, you are not limited to those programs that are currently registered. This may be a new company in your area willing to register their program.
  • Help the student and company fill out the Apprenticeship Agreement for registration into the National Registered Apprenticeship System.

Note: For a student to work in an apprenticeship program, the sponsor's company must be registered with the Office of Apprenticeship.

  • Submit the Apprenticeship Agreement to the Office of Apprenticeship for registration.
  • Ensure a plan for graduation is in place. A student must be on track for graduation in order to participate in an apprenticeship program.
  • Monitor the student's activities. This includes on-the-job training and the required related instruction.
  • Call the Office of Apprenticeship (OOA) (801) 524-5452 if you need any assistance. Remember that there are people to help you. This may be the OOA, but could include a work-based learning coordinator, ATE coordinator, ATE director, etc.
