Getting Started

Registered apprenticeship program sponsors identify the minimum qualifications to apply into their apprenticeship program. The eligible starting age can be no less than 16 years of age. However, individuals must usually be 18 to be an apprentice in hazardous occupations. All applicants are required to meet the minimum qualifications. Based on the selection method utilized by the sponsor, additional qualification standards, such as fair aptitude tests, interviews, school grades and previous work experience may be identified.

How Can You Help An Individual Interested In Apprenticeship

  • Review the apprenticeable occupation list with the client. There are over 800 trades, arts, occupations, professions, etc. that fit under the apprenticeship training model.
  • Visit the apprenticeship sponsor list available online at http://www.utahtraining.org/seekers/sponsors.html. This listing of registered program sponsors does not signify they are taking applications for apprenticeship or employment. It is a starting place to see, which companies in your area have a registered apprenticeship program. A client must have a job with a registered apprenticeship program sponsor in order to participate.
  • Contact the employer sponsor to see if there is a possibility of the company hiring an apprentice. Remember, you are not limited to those programs that are currently registered. This may be a new company in your area willing to register their program.
    Note: If a company does not have a registered apprenticeship program, offer to help in the development. Your single point of contact in the region or the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training can offer assistance. First register the company, then the apprentice(s) under the new apprenticeship program.
  • Help the student and company fill out the Apprenticeship Agreement for registration into the National Registered Apprenticeship System.
  • Make sure the company submits the Apprenticeship Agreement to the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training for registration. This ensures the apprentice receives the official registration documentation from the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.
